Narrative

John originated from Birtley, Co. Durham, moving down to Ki ngs Newton with his family who were seeking work. John was a very good singer. He was one of the leading cho irboys at Melbourne Church and was offered a position wit h Lichfield Cathedral Choir. His father refused to give hi m this great chance in life). John was also taken away fro m Melbourne Church choir at this time! John did his apprenticeship at Ford and Weston Ltd., Derby . He worked for Jack Passam, undertakers, of Castle Stree t for many years. He moved from there to Melbourne Enginee ring, Derby Road to work until he retired as a skilled turn er.
